A pair of Jeholornis, a Cretaceous bird, on scratchboard. This genus is known for its bizarre "double" tail, which bears both an aerodynamic fan at its base and an oddly-shaped frond at the end. I decided to use the frond as a starting point for this restoration, reasoning that as it apparently served no function in flight, it could have evolved for display. I modeled the male's plumage (right) on Great and Kori Bustards and various grouse and the female on grouse.
